Tour Details

Walk through Vienna’s Natural History Museum to observe the evolution of life, from prehistoric giants and ancient meteorites to early human creativity and the mineral world. The museum's grand entrance is located on Maria-Theresien-Platz, opposite the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Present your ticket at the main counter inside the central dome hall, then proceed through a brief security check. Inside, visitors may move through the museum independently.

Established in 1889, the Natural History Museum contains 39 exhibition halls covering the history of Earth, from the formation of the solar system to human civilizations. The displays begin with mineralogy and meteorites, including one of the world’s largest public meteorite collections, followed by extensive fossil collections and prehistoric artifacts. Among the permanent exhibits is the Venus of Willendorf, a 29,500-year-old figurine representing early human artistic expression. The 'Ice Age Children and Their World' hall offers hands-on activities and displays recreating life during the last Ice Age, designed for younger visitors.

Hall 1, the Crystal World, features minerals and gemstones with interactive stations that allow visitors to touch, observe, and experiment, demonstrating the formation and geometry of these natural structures. The recently renovated Amphibians and Reptiles Rooms present evolutionary adaptations of cold-blooded species through detailed specimens and dioramas. The museum also hosts rotating special exhibitions, or Sonderausstellungen, covering a range of topics such as public health campaigns and the cultural significance of rhinoceroses.
