Café Landtmann

A wonderful café experience in the heart of Vienna! We highly recommend making a reservation, as it’s a very popular spot and well worth the visit. The atmosphere is elegant, the location is beautiful, and the service was warm and friendly throughout our visit. We tried the vegan apple strudel, strawberry vanilla ice cream, and the strawberry pastry—everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The vegan apple strudel was a lovely surprise, and the desserts paired perfectly with the classic café ambiance. If you’re looking for a traditional Viennese café with excellent desserts, great service, and a charming setting, Café Landtmann is definitely worth visiting.

Café Landtmann has a beautiful atmosphere, both inside and on the terrace. If there isn’t a major event taking place in Vienna, booking wasn’t necessary during our stay, we visited three times over three days and were always able to get a table. The coffee, cakes, drinks, and food were all delicious, and during our first two visits the service was friendly, making it a place we were happy to return to. Unfortunately, our last visit on 5 July 2026 at around 3:00 pm was a completely different experience. Because of the wind, we asked if it would be possible to sit inside. We were initially told it was full, but after checking, we were seated inside where many tables were actually available. From there, the experience went downhill. We were only given one menu, and when the waiter handed me a German menu, he simply told me to look at the other menu if I didn’t understand it. Throughout the meal, his attitude felt dismissive. When I ordered the apple strudel without the vanilla topping, he commented that I was ordering it “too basic” and that it wouldn’t be good. While this may have been intended as advice, it came across as an unnecessary remark. I also asked for water. During our previous visits, each coffee was automatically served with a glass of water, and I noticed nearby tables receiving the same. Ours never arrived, and I eventually had to stop the waiter to remind him. Throughout the visit, nobody checked whether everything was alright or asked if we wanted anything else. My partner would have happily ordered another lemonade, as he had on previous visits, but we didn’t feel comfortable trying to get the waiter’s attention again. The most disappointing moment came when paying. The waiter handed us the card machine without showing the bill or confirming the amount and stood watching us while we selected a tip. Since we weren’t satisfied with the service, we chose not to leave one. After we pressed continue, he responded sarcastically, “Ah… so not good service.” That comment made us feel genuinely uncomfortable. We left the café with a bad feeling, which was especially disappointing because we had really enjoyed our previous visits and had happily left generous tips before. I’m sharing this because I hope it was simply an off day. Café Landtmann is a beautiful café with excellent food and drinks, but service should make guests feel welcome, not uncomfortable.

Café Landtmann is a must-visit place in Vienna. So much history and a beautiful interior will enhance any meal. The salads proved to be a good choice on such a hot day, and the Austrian wine and desserts were delicious. The waitstaff was very good. We spent a pleasant afternoon here.

Got to visit Café Landtmann twice during my trip to Vienna, and no matter what time you visit or walk past, the place always seems to be buzzing. It’s probably helped by the steady stream of tourists, but regardless, it creates a beautiful atmosphere to be part of. There’s an elevated old-world charm to the place, the warm wood interiors, cosy lighting, impeccably dressed staff, and polished white-glove style of service all come together to make the experience feel special, especially as a visitor. Service was excellent on both visits. I also appreciated how diverse the staff were. It made the space feel even more welcoming and approachable as a tourist. I have to say, I enjoyed the coffees more than the cakes. The cakes leaned a little too sweet and dense for my personal taste, but I imagine that’s very much part of the traditional Viennese café experience. Definitely worth a visit during your stay in Vienna. I’d particularly recommend stopping by later in the evening, around 9 p.m., for a late-night coffee, drink, and a sweet ending to the day. It tends to be less busy then, allowing you to enjoy the experience at your own pace.

I have mixed feelings about Cafe Landtmann. The atmosphere is absolutely stunning. The design, decor, and overall look of the place are beautiful. I sat inside as a solo guest, and my table was very nice, with a small round sofa-style seat on the side, so I felt quite comfortable. That said, the food and coffee felt overrated and quite overpriced. I think you are mainly paying for the atmosphere and the historic setting. The service was also a bit inconsistent. I couldn’t really tell who my waiter was, as several different staff members came by at different points. When I was finished, I waited quite a long time for someone to check on me, and eventually had to ask for the bill myself. I felt the service could have been more attentive. Overall, I would recommend this cafe if you are going for a special occasion or want to enjoy brunch surrounded by beautiful decor. It’s definitely a beautiful place, but for me, the food, coffee, and service didn’t fully match the price.
